“Mr President, your worst enemies are those people around you who turn everyone against you. All Nigerians are your friend and they love you,” a former President of the Senate, Senator Iyorchia Ayu told President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.
He also told told President Buhari to be more tolerant of the opposition.
Speaking during the Special National Honours Investiture at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Ayu said the President should note that “opposition is not an enemy.”
Ayu, a chieftain of the defunct Social Democratic Party, SDP, the platform the late M.K.O.Abiola ran for the June 12 election recalled how he and former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu did oppose each other.
He said despite holding different opinions, they came together to work in the interest of the party.
Against this backdrop, Ayu urged Buhari to be more tolerant of the opposition, stressing that those around him are his enemies and not the opposition.
He said, “I remember in those days, I was supporting MKO Abiola and Tinubu was supporting Babagana Kingide, we usually tell each other that our candidate will win during the Congress.
“While in Jos for the Congress, we usually compare notes and when the election was done and results announced, Abiola won. I went to Tinubu and told him we have won. I said that because I had the party in mind.
“Mr President, I said this because the opposition is not an enemy, though in the military you kill opposition but not in a democratic dispensation.
“In the democratic dispensation opposition is not an enemy. People believe that you are unforgiven but this event has shown otherwise. I urge you to be more tolerant.
