The Governor of Niger state, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello on Tuesday said his administration has so far spent over N470 million to combat armed banditry and other security concerns but more worried that the bandits has refused to be engaged in any form of dialogue.
Governor Bello told the, Critical Stakeholders Meeting on the State of Affairs in Niger State, at the Idris Lgbo Kutigi international conference centre, Minna that, so far about 1, 000 Nigerlites are in Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) unable to return to their ancestral homes.
More worrisome to the administration is that the bandits have refused all entreaties for dialogue and therefore become so daring for the state to handle, Governor Bello lamented as he explained to the stakeholders the number of challenges his administration is grappling with and which has causing stagnation to his administration’s developmental strides.
“We had devoted time to see how we can provide succor to the over 1, 000 IDPs in Kagara and the issue of flood in Minna cropped up. As we try to resolve the flooding caused majorly by the blockage of drainage channels, the issue of Suleja-Minna road came up, all these we have been trying to manage at once”.
According to Governor Bello, “We spent over N470 million to combat banditry and other forms of insecurity. The security situation in Niger state is becoming worrisome but we are determined to ensure that the situation is brought down to its barest minimum”.
“We have used every opportunity to dialogue with them but those in the Pandogari axis have refused to listen to us, the bandits have become so daring armed with sophisticated weapons which they use to unleash pain on our people and rape our women as well”.
Governor Bello said his administration is not relenting on ensuing security of lives and properties of Nigerlites are guaranteed, adding that, “The bandits seemed resolute to carrying out their criminal intents, making life miserable for the communities”.
Despite all that the state government have done, the Governor said security situation remained unabated particularly along the; Rafi, Munya and Shiroro Local Government where the long stretch of thick forests aid the armed bandits in carryout their nefarious activities unhindered.
