One of the vibrant leading House of Assembly aspirant seeking to represent Jema’a Local Government in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Ms Ndi Kato has urged the constituents to focus more on capacity instead of gender in electing who represent them.
The House of Assembly hopeful who has been a strong voice and a woman human right activist advocating for 30 percent encouraging women active participation in politics in Nigeria stated this during her Local Government declaration On Sunday in Kafanchan the headquarters of Jema’a Local government area of Kaduna state.
She however, “my contest is not all about wrestling power from the men or working against each other but having the work done and moving the local government to a limelights.”
She noted that,”Women are requesting for 30 percent to ensures that they have a starting point. This has worked in Kenya. When Kenya started this, nobody thought they are going to move forward, women representation in Kenya has really gone up.”
“The 30 percent is to also ensure there is an anchor seat for women which they are entitle to.
She also, expressed worried that the present administration has no women representation in the legislative arm of government and the women are really lagging on that area.
She noted that,” We have been working assiduously with NGOs and other women who are already occupying offices to com talk, trained and push women to go into politics.”
She disclosed that, “the challenges the present House of Assembly members are facing is hinge on the fact that they do not have financial autonomy and I believe they are doing their best giving the circumstances.
“I know the effort our present House of Assembly member has put in, they now have financial autonomy which of course they are not going to benefit what they fought for, but that is what representation entails. We are going to enjoy the effort they put in towards that financial autonomy,” Ndi maintained.
