Elders committee forum of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau state have lamented continue renewal of non elected local government chairmen in the state, it said the action of government was a rape of democracy.
“We (PDP) lament these continuous rape on democracy by forcing leaders on the people at the third tier of government.”
It stressed that “further extension of the tenure of Local Government Transition Committees: we note with a sense of worry the extension of the tenure of the present Local Government Transition Committees by one month.”
A former governor of Plateau state, Ambassador Fedelis Tapgun who was recently appointed Member, Board of Trust of PDP read communiqué of the elders forum meeting on Thursday, at party Secretariat.
It will be recalled that the state house of assembly had yesterday, Wednesday during it sitting approved another one month extension of the tenure of the 17 transition committee chairmen of the state.
It is also on notice that since the assumption of office by the present administration led by governor Simon Lalong three years ago, Plateau state government have not conducted local government elections, there was a failed attempt of conducting local government elections late 2017.
PDP said the tenure elongation by APC administration is unconstitutional and a mockery of Democracy “this seemingly unending unconstitutional tenure of transition committee since 2016 is clearly a mockery of the much talked about peace the APC government claims to have brought with their inauguration in 2015.”
The Plateau PDP elders committee forum also expressed worries over renewed attacks and killings of innocent citizens in Nigeria, particularly in north central Nigeria.
“We lament the incessant butchering of human lives and attendant destruction of homes and properties of the ordinary citizens of Nigeria, from Plateau, Kaduna, Benue, Nassarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Zamfara etc, which have gone on for too long.”
It stressed further that securities operatives were not proactive enough to have nip in the bud the recent unrest that claimed over 200 lives in Barkinladi, Riyom and some parts of Jos south.
“It is lamentable that communities can be attacked and hundred slaughtered for over 48 hours without any immediate provision of rescue efforts. This obviously points to the fact that the Nation’s security system has been compromised, and that government lacks the will and capacity to resolve these challenges to peace and security.”
The communiqué by the Plateau PDP elders forum noted with dismay that the APC led government has failed in it primary responsibility.
“As clearly provided for in our Constitution, “the security and welfare of the people is the primary purpose of government” (Section 14 (2b), 1999 Constitution As Amended. The frequency and quantum of these despicable bloodletting attacks on innocent communities makes a mockery of the much taunted ‘Security’ Mantra of the present administration.” It stated.
