Apprehension and fear for the worst usually engulfs victims of abductions for ransom and their families when they are taken away and held in captivity.
Whenever such victims are released however, the reaction is instant jubilation by the victims, their families and even the general public.
Each time victims of the Kaduna train attack are released the mood of the nation has been that of joy.
Each time students of Bethel Baptist School in Kaduna State who were taken from their school on July 5, 2021 but released in batches regain their freedom from bandits, their parents and guardians leap for joy running to welcome them with with tears of happiness and giving thanks to God for the release of their wards.
Students and teachers of College of Agriculture and Animal Science Bakura in Zamfara State who were kidnapped but rescued after a week were released they were received at the Government House by Governor Bello Mattawalle, amidst jubilation.
Same thing with the six male students of Igbonla Government College, Epe, Lagos, who were abducted from their school premises but later released after 65 days in captivity in July, 2017.
The students were released to government officials led by the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Hon Agboola Ajayi and taken to the Presidential Villa, Abuja to meet with the then Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
This jubilation according to a parent who does not want to be named is because of the long absence created by the abduction and the relief that comes with knowing they are alive and well.
“Some of the victims never get to make it alive and the joy of seeing loved ones not only come out alive but free from the trauma usually makes people leap for joy,” he said.
But long after the jubilation, some of the pains of abductions linger as some of the victims hardly recover from the experience.
Relations of a kidnapped victim in Kaduna recall how their brother who was kidnapped in 2021 and later released, is suffering from near total memory loss since he was released by his abductors who took him from his house along the Kaduna express way and kept him in captivity for over a month before he was released after ransom was paid.
“He only recognizes people that are close to him and even then you have to keep reminding him to reassure him,” one of his siblings said.
Relations of another victim who was kidnapped along the Abuja-Kaduja highway said it took months to get him to sleep normally as he always stays awake throughout the night and becomes agitated at every sound.
“He will just sit and be staring blankly and any sudden noise gets him agitated,” he said.
Medical experts say this is because of the dehumanizing conditions the victims suffer while in captivity and the trauma of living with near death situations for months.
A staff of one of the hospitals said the horror does not end with the release of the victims as many of them bear scars of the horrible experiences for some time.
Some of the victims, according to Flagship investigations are made to live with physical body injuries that makes it difficult for them to walk or sit as they’re used to, bear scars on their bodies due to lacerations from torture, suffer pangs of diseases like malaria and pneumonia and worse, memory loss.
From the accounts of many victims, they are made to walk very long distances without foot wears, made to drink water from ponds and other unhygienic sources, made to survive on fruits harvested in the wild or half cooked meals; starvation, made to sleep in open places and daily made to beg for their lives.
One of the National Youth Service Corps Members rescued after along Kaduna-Zaria highway said the bandits made them to trek from around 11:pm when they were abducted to 12 nooon the following day.
A released kidnap victim who was abducted in February in Jos, told our reporter how he was forced to sleep in a dark cave only for him to run out when he realised there was a python in it
“Even when they killed the snake, the fear did not allow me sleep in the night till two days after when I was released after my people paid the ransom,” he recalled.
Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab had stated upon the release of the Bethel school children that the trauma parents of these children are going through is not good for their physical and mental health.
“The worst is how the children are faring in this rainy season. Those who were released came back home very sick and weak, suggesting that those not back may be in a more severe situation, ” he lamented.
Investigations show that only few get to recover fully in good time.
A medical expert said this has not been helped by the fact that most of the victims are not taken to the hospitals before reuniting them with their families.
He said, normally, victims who suffer such experiences are supposed to be taken to the hospital for counselling, treatment and for nourishment before they are reunited with their families but most time they are taken straight to their homes or to the police stations to make statement.
“This slows down the recovery process as it adds to their shock and trauma,” he said.
He advised against subjecting them to.the stress of frequent questions and interrogations but allowing them time to heal and recover gradually.
