Zamfara state government has commenced the distribution of 3.1 million Insecticide Treated Net (ITN) and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign to eliminate malaria in the state.
The state commissioner of Health, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad Kanoma made the disclosure in Gusau on Tuesday during a media parley.
The state Health Commissioner said the state government with support from the US President’s Malaria Initiative (US PMI) has commenced the process of the 2020 Integrated ITN and SMC campaign in the state to rid the state of malaria.
“A total of 3.1 million treated mosquito nets will be distributed to the people of Zamfara state free of charge through mass campaign as parts of efforts to eliminate malaria in Zamfara state,” he said.
Kanoma added that the SMC medicine will protect over one million children under the age of five years from contracting malaria throughout the period of greatest malaria risk.
“The objective of the integrated ITN-SMC campaign is to ensure that every two persons in the state there is at least one mosquito net to sleep inside and also ensure that every eligible child receives four cycles of SMC medicine to prevent malaria in this rainy season,” he said.
He said the distribution of the mosquito nets will be done in 1111 distribution points across the 14 local government areas while the SMC medicine will be given door to door in four cycles.
