The Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has warned its members against conducting parallel congresses during the gubernatorial primaries in Anambra State.
Senator Makarfi also urged the State Chapters of the PDP where elections are to be conducted in future to ensure that they produce popular and sellable candidates who will enjoy the majority support of members and avoid any situation where votes will be divided on factional lines in conceding defeat to opponents of the party.
He spoke in Kaduna on Tuesday, while reacting to the crisis in the party and efforts by former President Goodluck Jonathan and other stakeholders to broker peace and ensure that PDP survives.
The former Kaduna State Governor said that the members of the caretaker committee of the party under his Chairmanship still enjoy the support of all the stakeholders of the party, saying that the members of the committee will continue to dispense their functions under the law and await the decision of the case before the Supreme Court.
“The court of appeal majority judgment, by its decision in legal form gives Modu Sheriff that status as chairman, and not just him but it returned the entire executive officers of the party. See, people still continue making the mistake, limiting the matter to Modu Sherrif.
“The court of appeal returned all former national officers, about 34 of them to their former positions. Of all these people, it is Modu Sherrif and four others that are seemingly calling themselves the working committee”.
Speaking on the outcome of the peace meeting called by the former President Goodluck Jonathan, he said, “I really can’t say anything about that meeting because I was not the convener of that meeting and I did not nominate people for the meeting either.
“Myself and other six members of the caretaker committee were invited by former President Goodluck Jonathan, and we attended. Of course I was meant to understand that Sheriff nominated about 55 people to attend that meeting and they were invited. The opinion of the caretaker members is that we have nothing personal to promote and whatever the party wanted we should have and whatever would be resolved we should not object to it.
“Even when members of the high table went into an inner room to discuss how to resolve issues and for the meeting to go ahead I didn’t go to join them. I remained with those invited. Because I had no reason to join them to resolve any matter. Myself and our position during and after the meeting was that whatever the party wanted, so be it”.
