It is no longer news that our young people are on daily basis leaving the country in droves in search of greener pasture overseas, a journey so many are eager to embark upon as a result of the precarious economic situation here in Nigeria.
Understandably, a lot more do not mind the risk of tolling a “short cut” due to the high cost of such overseas trips. To this end, they don’t mind parting with a little amount to join the increasing number of citizens of other countries attempting to access Europe through the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea, a journey so many people do not often stay alive to tell the story.
This desperation to flee Nigeria has a lot to do with their inability to make a decent livelihood here due to the depleting economic fortunes, volatile environment and harsh policies of government. Many who want to explore the entrepreneurship part are frustrated with difficulties in accessing capital, high tax rate, poor infrastructure, including epileptic power supply.
A friend of mine who after several years of futile job hunting got frustrated, almost depressed, was left with the option of attempting to survive through any possible way he could. He was able to source a loan at a commercial bank with an extremely high interest rate. He secured a farmland along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway where he cultivated groundnut, corn, millet and other cash crops.
He invested so much in labour, fertilizer and pesticides at least to have a decent harvest so that he could repay the borrowed fund and have something to cater for his family. The hope was high as harvest season approached.
It was however truncated by a heightened security concern that plagued that axis. There was consistent abduction, robbery, kidnap for ransome and lots of security challenges. He was only able to access that farmland just once to take some few crops in 2020. This was under heavy security attachment comprising army and the police at a very high cost running in hundreds of thousand Naira.
As you are reading this, that farm was abandoned and nobody was able to access it again after the first attempt. It is lying fallow with the millions of Naira invested in it. The bank is knocking and he has no explanation to offer.
There are a lot of Nigeria youths in his shoes who have been routinely frustrated, yet their efforts to make a meaningful living end up as efforts in futility due to the docility and inability of those in authority to protect the lives and property of citizens.
There is really nothing on ground to cheer our young population and raise their hope. This is despite their creativity, energy, zeal and passion to make the proverbial milk and honey out of a dead stone. To understand the ingenuity of Nigerian youths, take a look at the entertainment industry and see how they are bringing honour to the country, writing its name in the map of gold.
They have been largely limited and their potentials lying untapped, so it is understandable that they do see their future beyond the shores of this country, they want to make a meaningful livelihood elsewhere, deploying their God-given potentials and skills.
In all these, one of the fastest global organisations, JR Riley Global Services has bridged this gap between Nigerians who want to travel overseas and their countries of choice.
