The Nigerian police have confirmed three death in an attacked on Dong community of Jos south local government area of Plateau state Thursday night.
Confirming the attack Friday, in a telephone interview, spokesman of the police command in Plateau state, ASP Terna Tyopev, said three people died in the incident.
“I can confirm to you that three deaths occurred in the Thursday night attack on Dong community, it is an unfortunate incident. But police are on the trail of the suspects.”
Worried by the development, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, has appealed for calm, following the attack last night by armed gunmen in Dong village of Jos North Local Government Area of the state, which culminated in the unfortunate loss of lives of some people in the area.
The Governor, in a statement issued on Friday, through the commissioner for information and communication Yakubu Dati noted that relative calm had been restored to the area following the deployment of adequate security and urged the people to remain law-abiding.
Governor Lalong therefore sympathizes with the bereaved and injured assuring that government is taking steps to alleviate their pains.
He calls on citizens to volunteer useful information to security agencies that will lead to the arrest of the criminals and also enjoins the good people of the State to resist the temptation of spreading wild and unfounded rumours that tend to aggravate the situation.
Governor Lalong also said that security agencies have been directed to do everything possible to smoke out the perpetrators of the crime from their hideouts in order to end the repeated orgy of violence in the state.
Meanwhie, the parish Priest of Saint August Catholic Church, pastoral Rev Fr Anthony Oparaji a mass burial was conducted or the victims.
“Three corpses were found in the yesterday (Thursday) night attack, they my parishioners, all male adults were brutally murdered by the attackers, we are about conducting a mass burial for the victims, due to the level of the damage on the corpses. Apart form the death, about 15 houses were burnt during the attack.”
Rev Fr. Oparaji added that “We have informed the police, with other security agencies, we also told government officials of the incident.”
