To fill the gap created due to lack of awareness and negative perception of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), a nongovernmental organization, Contributory Pension and Happy Retirement Advocacy (COPEHRA), has commenced advocacy campaigns geared towards informing Nigerians including the informal sector of the economy of the benefits of the scheme.
The Chairman of the Programme Advisory Committee (PAC) of COPEHRA, Sunny Osuagu, made this known to journalists on Saturday, in Abuja at a press briefing organized by the group.
While advising players in the informal sector of the economy to key into the CPS in order to make provision for the future, he said the negative perception of the public about the scheme is affecting its development in the country.
Osuagu said that COPEHRA is advocating for a sustainable pension and happy retirement through the CPS which can only be achieved through the creation of awareness and education of the public on the benefits of engaging in it.
He also stated further that the sensitization targets its critical stakeholders that includes employers and employees in the public and private sectors, professionals in all fields, artisans, youths, pension regulators, pension unions, trade and market unions, pension operators and state governments.
Outlining the plans of the group geared towards sensitizing the public on CPS, Osuagu said COPEHRA would embark on a Contributory Pension Walk in February 2022, as parts of its intensive sensitization campaign to create awareness to stakeholders to know their rights and obligations, and the benefits of the CPS.
He stated further that activities of the group would employ sound internal mechanism for accountability and transparency.
Speaking to newsmen at the briefing, a member of COPEHRA, Babagana Kaigama, said the advocacy plans of the group intend to bring into the scheme, the informal sector in order to encourage financial inclusiveness.
