In an effort to monitor activities of operators of the transportation sector to tackle insecurity challenge faced by the nation in recent times, the Cross River State government has commenced the process of issuing security numbers (security codes), to operators of transport sector.
The state government also said that through the issuance of the security codes to motorists,it can monitor vehicles entrying and exiting the state, and to track those using thier vehicles to aide Kidnapping and other criminal activities.
Speaking yesterday in an interactive session with the operators of the sector, (representatives of bus drivers, tricycle operators and truck drivers) at the conference Hall of Transportation ministry), Ndidem Usang Iso Road, Calabar, the state transportation Commissioner, Pastor Ekpeyong Cobham, sues for transporters cooperation. if operators of the sector desire peace and sanity in the sector.
The çommissioner stated that the ministry has extended the registration of vehicles by vehicle owners up to February 15, to enable the vehicle owners obtained thier security numbers.
He said that 2 weeks is enough for any vehicle operator willing to comply with the ministry of transportation to complete the registration process to avoid sanctions.
I. His words Cobham said, “There are requisite fines, against defaulters known to had disobey government directives or criminally forged Coding number will be handled over to law enforcement agents.
“As the head of the ministry,I am conscious of the fact that we are at the very critical period to reform the sector in line with His Excellency’s mantra of people’s friendly policies”.
The çommissioner averred that through the registration of vehicles, the ministry would be able to code the vehicles and generate data that would assist the ministry regulate all that is happening in transportation sub-sector.
“We had an instance where someone used a tricycle fur robbery. It was impossible to track down the criminal because because he had a fake security number on his tricycle.
“We have to holistically commence the process of thinking outside the box on how to restore this critical function of the ministry.
“Initial phase is to reconcile the existing numbers to determine those which are fake and those that are authentic, stressing that there are certain documentation that will aide the ministry differentiate codes that were authentic from fake ones.
“When a particular number is picked and keyed to our website it will give you true identity of vehicle owner, and rider” stressing that absence of this provided very porous situation in the past.
