By Shehu Ahmed Buwayi:
Katagum Emirate was an independent vassal state of the confederated Sokoto Caliphate, and a gateway to famous Borno Empire. Katagum Emirate and its sister Emirate, Jama’are constitutes Bauchi North Senatorial District. Jama’are Emirate has been with Katagum Emirate always, anywhere it was exercised: they were together in Katagum Province, then Kano Province and finally Bauchi Province. The five (5) indigenous tribes that make-up the population of the Emirate are:- Fulfulde, Hausa, Karai-Karai, Larawa (Kanuri dialect) and Badawa. The Emirate consists of Six (6) Local Government Areas as indicated below:-Gamawa, Giade, Itas-Gadau, Katagum, Shira and Zaki.It is pertinent to digress a little only to have idea of what politics is all about, since the subject connotes to 2023 elections. That’s aside; Harold Laswell defined Politics as ‘the determination of who gets what and how.’ The powerful Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung perceived politics as ‘war without bloodshed. ‘Now that Nigeria is not fortunate with patriotic opposition, on this note, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his followers should be commended for decent and aggressive opposition with nationalistic sense. But the current motor park touts in the opposition politics seat in Nigeria are of concern to well-meaning Nigerians. What transpired in the pre-2015 general elections in the Middle belt particularly Benue state, where the planned/artificial clashes between the Fulani Herdsmen and the indigenous communities for sake elections, where lives if innocence citizens were lost, was an indicator. The current opposition has value to human lives; they can go to any extent to ensure victory, very unfortunate. What happened is now history, especially the immediate end of the Fulani Herdsmen feud with the host communities in the middle belt region immediately after the elections. That aside, the recent verbal wars between different camps in Katagum is a source of concern to well-meaning citizens of the Emirate. I was told by my childhood friend that those attacking the person and integrity of the Honourable Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu are from Katagum. ‘Inalillahi wa inaillaihim raji’un’. This is uncultured, misnomer, irresponsibility and unacceptable.Katagum is generally a peaceful Emirate with the exception of pockets of killings committed by outsiders in Azare. Possibly by the Boko Haram insurgents looking for expansion of territory under their control. Prominent citizens were killed; the intruders were defeated by the united youth of Katagum Emirate, special thanks to our powerful youth, especially those killed in the process of defeating the insurgents. May their gentle sole rest in perfect peace. Ameen! We need peace, and nothing but peace in Katagum Emirate and Bauchi state in particular and Nigeria in general.
SUGGESTIONS OF HOW TO ACHIEVE PEACE IN KATAGUM EMIRATE
The homogeneity of the Emirate is not in doubt, this reminds me of the words of my respected classmate, Professor Musa Maisamari of Abuja University on Katagum Emirate which reads: “The plain truth is that Katagum zone is monolithic and neatly connected by blood, faith and marriages than any zone in Bauchi. They therefore have the advantage of accommodating one another than the rest. Use that as a strength and explore the possibility of extending have of friendship across so that the divide and rule will be neutrality. Good morning my friend. I appreciate your forthrightness.”The way our parents treated us in the past confirmed the erudite Professor’s comment. When I was in primary school in the late 1960’s, during long vacation, my Grandmother, used to send me to their village: Udubo during the holidays. Late Hajiya Iyale Malam Buwayi, the granddaughter of Sarkin Udubo Jatau, escorted me to the house of late Malami Udubo to join him for the journey to Udubo. I could vividly remembered being driven from Azare to Udubo by the late N. A. Driver: Ajajiki. I was attached to the son of late Malami Udubo, Bappah to spend the holidays together. I enjoyed the home coming as well as built the life network. This was the example of many channels of promotion unity in the Emirate. In view of the foregoing, I wish to humbly suggests for the intervention of the elders especially the Emirate Council and our elders of high reputes: elders like Malam Shekarau Umar, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmad, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu, Alhaji Hamza Sakwa, Ambassador Dada Chinade, Professor Emeritus Dandatti Abdulkadir, Professors Dauda Bagari and Gambo Laraba, etc.Katagum will not forget the contributions of the late Emirs: Alhaji Umaru Faruk and Alhaji Muhammadu Kabir Umar for their timely intervention in situations like this. This reminds me the words of ‘Na Goma Mai Ban Haushi’ ‘ Daudar Gora a Ciki a ke shanye wa’, though political period, peace building will not be misunderstood as meddling in politics. We expects them to use their wealth of experience and administrative proficiency to safeguard our Emirate from the hands of opportunists, hired thugs and political lily-livered. The peace move is aimed at helping the Emirate, identify and implement peace initiatives in order to resolve the lingering conflicts between the well-meaning sons of the Emirate as well as form building blocks for sustainable peace. Participation of Emirate Council and elders alike is indispensable to the development of the Emirate. As you’re very much aware, for any community to be able to achieve optimum capacity utilization, a considerable level of peace should be put in place that cut across the populace and strata of the Emirate’s socio-political and economic fabric. It is for this purpose that I crave the indulgence of our elders to come together to brainstorm and find a lasting solution to this strange happening in the Emirate. Our elders should focus on the following amongst others:-* make the warring factions to recognize the importance of communication and dialogue in resolving conflicts;* to promote peace and tolerance among the various local government areas;* to identity the immediate and remote causes of the conflict;* to create a channel of communication for sustainable reconciliation of conflicting parties;* to prevent further verbal war amongst the parties; and* to build consensus with regard to the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved.
No doubt, Katagum Emirate is presently experiencing the youth bulge; the potential of youth bulge indicates demographic revenue, it’s important to note that investment in Katagum youth can mean the difference between growth-boosting demographic revenue and a social malaise. Today, the large group of young men and women in Katagum Emirate can’t access quality education, health care and earned satisfactory income, in this case, the youth bulge could undermine economic growth, peace, and security like what we witnessed in the activities of ‘Yan Boda’ menace. Our elders should be aware that without strategic investment, youth will continue to face social and economic challenges and slow development efforts are certain. Therefore, deliberate and strategic investment in our youth is necessary for the youth bulge to become a demographic dividend. The effort of our young people in defeating the insurgency in our Emirate indicates their willingness for partnership with the adults and elders to move the Emirate forward. When given the right support, the energy and creativity of young people can transform development efforts positively. Time without number, when chance to talk to any elder; I used to advise, for the establishment of Foundation to cater for youth development. Surely, the right investments on youth will allow the Emirate to harness the benefit of youth bulge for economic growth and ensure sustainability for future. To the warring parties, their social media fight/war have shown greed, envy, jealousy, ungratefulness, intolerance, vengeance and malice, which are unIslamic – the faith we believe in. Undoubtedly, some of parties have built names which lies and public outcry will not damage. And even if paid to spoil our political fortunes come 2023, they’re wasting their time, because Katagum has prepared and will come out stronger this time around. We’ve done the home work and built network outside the Emirate, they might not be aware. Don’t under estimate our preparation please. Silence is the best answer….You can’t be thinking of somebody’s offence and be thinking success. No! Malice has destroyed many people’s life they spent all their time thinking about someone and gossip. Time used to accomplished malicious act can be used to get better result by productive thinking. You can have hypertension for keeping malice. Therefore live a free life cut off offence and sees you succeed. Remember it’s Allah that gives and denied, so take mirror and see your reflection. Think, think twice, please.
