The Nigerians Bar Association (NBA), Abuja branch has called for the immediate release of Barr. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the spokesperson of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) from Police detention.
According to the NBA in a Statement by its Chairman, Barrister Hauwa Shekarau, the continuous detention of Ikenga despite Court Order is complete abuse to fundamental human rights.
“The Nigerian Bar Association Abuja branch (The Unity Bar) has received with shock the disturbing news of the continued detention of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere Esq despite a valid and subsisting Court Order made by the Federal High Court per Hon. Justice Taiwo O Taiwo in relation to the pending matter between him.
“We have also seen a copy of the enrolled Order by Hon. Justice O.A Musa of the FCT High Court requesting the Security operatives to respect Court Orders in respect of Barr. Ikenga and were further restrained from arresting or detaining him in any manner pending the determination of the motion on notice.
“We have observed with great concern contrary to this subsisting order, Barr. Ikenga was arrested on the 18th of June and up till the time of making this Press Release, he is still being held in detention against the Orders of the Honourable Court.
“The NBA Abuja Branch, (The Unity Bar) therefore, demand the immediate release of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere Esq by the Security operatives in obedience to the Orders of the Court.
“We find it rather strange and a bit discomforting that a legal practitioner would still remain in Custody despite a valid Court Order for his release. This is unacceptable, unconstitutional and an abuse of his fundamental rights and it is hereby rejected.
“We therefore condemn in very strong terms the continued detention of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere Esq. We also condemn in the strongest terms, the act of impunity and disrespect to the Courts and their judgments and Orders. We must all strive to respect the rule of law and constituted authorities.
“Having said that, I am very confident that the IGP and the DG DSS would intervene in the matter and he would be released immediately.
